A New Translation of the Classic Biblical Stories (1996)
tr. and introduction ”by Stephen Mitchell (1943-)
This book was associated with a Bill Moyers series about Genesis. The translation is very fresh and separates the various doublets and triplets by the writers known as J, E, and P; it also identifies some of the contributions of the Redactor (R). By separating the stories into self-contained and internally consistent versions, the work seems much easier to understand.
Mitchell does not interpose his own spiritual views as much in this work as in his other works on Job and Jesus.
