Snow White, Blood Red (1993)
Black Thorn, White Rose (1994)
Ruby Slippers, Golden Tears (1995)
edited by Ellen Datlow (1949-) & Terri Windling (1958-)
These are three books in a series (presumed ongoing) of fairy tales for adults. I find them interesting because they are (nearly) all based on the themes of a very limited set of traditional fairy tales, and yet they show a great breadth of imagination and clever combination of traditional and new elements.
I like them as examples of creativity: starting with a given set of memes, and connecting with others, each writer creates a new set of memes. The editors provide almost no commentary on the stories, but include an introduction and a list of recommended reading for each book.
